Orthodontic Treatment - when is the right time?

Usually orthodontic treatment (straightening of crooked teeth) is undertaken when most of the adult teeth have come through and the baby teeth have been lost. This is so that the orthodontist can assess the amount of space needed to allow the teeth to fit together correctly. Also sometimes extraction of second teeth is necessary in order to make space in a crowded mouth.

Occasionally treatment can be started when there are still baby teeth present and the permanent teeth are beginning to erupt.

Adults can also have their teeth straightened and the notion that after a certain age one is too old is not true! Provided that the teeth and gums are healthy and the patient is prepared to wear braces most teeth can be straightened at any age.
